Speakers, microphones (MEMS, electret), buzzers, audio amplifiers (Class-D) and audio codecs are the main types. Impedance, power, frequency response and interface (analog, I2S) matter when choosing one. Alert tones, audio capture and multimedia are the most common applications.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an active and passive buzzer?+
An active buzzer contains an oscillator; given DC it emits a single tone. A passive buzzer needs an external square wave (PWM) and can play different tones/melodies at different frequencies.
Why is a Class-D audio amplifier preferred?+
Class-D amplifiers switch, so they are very efficient (run cool) and deliver high power in a small size. That is why they are common in battery-powered and compact audio devices.
Why does speaker impedance matter?+
The amplifier must match the speaker's impedance (e.g. 4Ω, 8Ω). The wrong impedance either lowers the volume or overloads the amplifier and can cause damage.
