Inductors & Coils

Inductors and coils are passive components that store energy in a magnetic field. By opposing sudden changes in current, they play a critical role in filtering and power conversion.

SMD power inductors, ferrite beads, chokes and toroidal coils are the main types. Inductance (henries), saturation current, DC resistance (DCR) and self-resonant frequency matter when choosing one. Switching power supplies, EMI filtering and RF circuits are the most common applications.

Frequently asked questions

What does an inductor do?+

An inductor stores energy by opposing changes in current; it is used for voltage conversion in switching supplies, noise suppression in filters and tuning in RF circuits.

Why does saturation current matter?+

If the current through the inductor exceeds its saturation rating the core saturates, inductance drops sharply and the circuit misbehaves. So saturation current should be chosen above the circuit's peak current.

What is a ferrite bead?+

A ferrite bead is a special inductor that suppresses high-frequency noise by turning it into heat. It is widely used as an EMI/noise filter on power and signal lines.
