Symbols

Reading Connections and Nodes

Lines represent wires. Where two wires cross, a dot means they're connected (a node); no dot means they just pass over each other and aren't connected. This distinction is critical in Kirchhoff analysis.

Reference Designators

Each component is labeled with a reference that has a prefix; this prefix tells you the component type:

Ground and Supply

The common ground (GND) and supply symbols show that every point with the same label is connected; this keeps the schematic clean without a tangle of wires.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing a crossing with a node: thinking a dotless crossing is connected leads to building the wrong circuit.
  • Skipping same-label points: the same GND/signal label in different places is connected.
  • Confusing a symbol with its value: R1 is a reference; its value (e.g. 1 kΩ) is written separately.
