What Are Ground (GND), Chassis and Reference?
Ground (GND) is the common reference point in a circuit against which all voltages are measured — usually the node taken as 0 V. Chassis refers to tying the enclosure to this reference. Since voltage is always between two points, “voltage” is meaningless without a shared reference (GND). Safety earth is a separate idea: it routes fault current to the earth.

Why Is a Common Ground Essential?

Connecting to the same ground through multiple paths can create small voltage differences between those paths and cause ground loop noise. Especially in audio and sensitive measurement circuits, the ground layout is designed carefully.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting a common GND: if two circuits are connected only by a signal wire, with no GND connected, communication won't work.
- Thinking "ground = mains earth": a circuit's GND and building earth aren't always the same thing.
- Routing a thin GND path: if the high-current return path is thin, voltage drop and noise rise.
