Fuses, PTC/resettable fuses, TVS diodes, varistors (MOV) and gas discharge tubes are the main types. Protection type, trigger threshold, response speed and energy rating matter when choosing one. Power inputs, data lines and communication ports are the most common protection points.

Frequently asked questions

What does a TVS diode do?+

A TVS diode conducts very fast when a sudden voltage spike (spike/ESD) hits the line, shunting the excess energy to ground and protecting sensitive circuits. It is common on USB and data lines.

How is a PTC fuse different from a normal fuse?+

A normal fuse blows once and must be replaced; a PTC (resettable) fuse raises its resistance under overcurrent to cut the current and returns to normal by itself once the fault clears.

Why is ESD protection needed?+

Static electricity from the human body can damage sensitive chips on contact. ESD protection components (TVS arrays) absorb this sudden discharge, protecting connector and button lines in particular.
