What Is the SH1106? OLED Display Controller (vs SSD1306) and Uses
The SH1106 is a controller that drives small monochrome OLED screens. It is very similar to the SSD1306 (usually 1.3" 132×64) and connects over I2C (0x3C) or SPI. The difference: the SH1106 is 132 pixels wide (a 2-pixel offset on a 128-pixel screen). If the image looks shifted, the wrong controller is selected in the library.
The SH1106 is a controller that drives small monochrome OLED screens. It is very similar to the SSD1306 (usually in 1.3" 132×64 modules) and connects over I2C/SPI. For the concept, see what is an OLED display.
What is the SH1106 used for?
The same tasks as the SSD1306: menus, sensor values, a clock, icons. The difference is that the SH1106 is 132 pixels wide (a 2-pixel offset on a 128-pixel screen); if the wrong controller/offset is selected in the library, the image looks shifted.

Watch out: confusion with the SSD1306
The SH1106 and SSD1306 look identical from outside but the controller differs. If content appears shifted by 2 pixels or corrupted, the wrong controller is likely selected in the library (choose the SH1106 vs SSD1306 profile correctly in U8g2).
