What Is an E-Ink (E-Paper) Display?
An E-Ink display (e-paper / electronic paper) is a display technology that preserves the image without consuming power once it's formed and reads like real paper.
How Does It Work?
The screen has black and white particles inside tiny capsules. With an applied electric field these particles rise to or sink from the surface. Once the image is formed the particles stay put; so energy is consumed only at the moment of change.
Why Does It Consume So Little Energy?
While LCD and OLED continuously refresh the image, E-Ink holds a static image without power. An e-reader can last weeks without charging.

Limitations
The refresh is slow and there can be a short flicker/ghosting on page changes. Most E-Ink is black and white; it isn't suited to colorful and fast content, and has no backlight.

Full and Partial Refresh
E-Ink does two kinds of refresh: a full refresh redraws the screen from scratch (clears ghosting but is slow and flickery), and a partial refresh updates only the changed area (fast but leaves a trace over time). A good design balances the two by doing a full refresh at intervals.
Common Mistakes
- Frequent updating: fast/continuous refreshing goes against E-Ink's purpose and wears its life.
- Ghosting: if a full refresh isn't done occasionally, ghost traces remain.
- Video expectation: it isn't suited to moving content.
