What Is a Toggle Switch?

1 min read
Quick answer

A toggle switch is a latching switch that changes position by flipping a small lever one way and keeps its position.

How It Works

While the lever is in one position the internal contacts are connected a certain way; when the lever is flipped to the other position the contact state changes and stays there on release (latching). This is how it differs from a momentary button.

Config.Function
SPSTSimple on/off
SPDTSelecting one of two paths
DPDTRouting two circuits together

Number of Positions

There are two-position (ON-OFF) or three-position (ON-OFF-ON) types. In three-position ones the middle position is usually "off"; this combines two separate modes and a neutral state in one switch.

Where Is It Used?

Device power switches, control panels, measurement instruments, amplifiers and the front panels of industrial equipment. It's robust and visually shows the position clearly.

Current Rating

Toggle switches usually carry higher current than tactile switches; still, in power switching beyond the rated value the contact life shortens and arcing occurs.

Mounting and Protection

Toggle switches are usually passed through a hole in the panel and fixed with a nut. If used outdoors, a rubber boot over the lever makes it water/dust protected. The lever length and nut diameter must be chosen for the panel thickness to be used.

Common Mistakes

  • Overcurrent: connecting a load above the switch rating.
  • Confusing positions: overlooking the middle (off) position in a three-position type.
  • Inductive load: skipping arc suppression with a motor/relay load.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a toggle and a button?+
A toggle is latching (stays in position); a button is momentary, returning on release.
What is ON-OFF-ON for?+
It lets two separate modes and the off state between them be selected with one switch.
