What Is the TC4420? MOSFET Gate Driver (6A): Pinout and Uses
The TC4420 is a single-channel, high-current (6 A peak) MOSFET gate driver. It charges and discharges a power MOSFET's gate capacitance fast, reducing switching loss (non-inverting; the inverting version is the TC4429). It drives only the low side (for high-side use the IR2110). Pinout DIP-8: IN(2), GND(3-4), OUT(5-6), VDD(7).
The TC4420 is a single-channel, high-current MOSFET gate driver. With up to 6 A peak current it charges and discharges a power MOSFET's gate very fast, reducing switching loss. For the concept, see what is a gate driver.
What is the TC4420 used for?
Fast-driving a single low-side MOSFET in DC-DC converters, motor drives and high-frequency PWM. A microcontroller pin cannot fast-drive a big MOSFET's gate capacitance; the TC4420 supplies that current (non-inverting; the inverting version is the TC4429).
TC4420 pinout (DIP-8)
| Pin | Function |
|---|---|
| 1 | NC |
| 2 | IN (input) |
| 3 | GND |
| 4 | GND |
| 5 | OUT (output) |
| 6 | OUT (output) |
| 7 | VDD (supply) |
| 8 | NC |
Watch out
It drives only the low side (for high-side/bridge use the IR2110). VDD is the gate-drive voltage (e.g. 12 V); a decoupling capacitor is a must. A small series resistor to the gate (for ringing/EMI) is used.
