What Is the IR2110? High/Low-Side Gate Driver and Uses
The IR2110 is a high-side & low-side MOSFET/IGBT gate driver. In half/full bridges and inverters it drives the top (floating-referenced) and bottom power switches via HIN/LIN inputs; the top side uses a bootstrap (diode+capacitor). WATCH OUT: it does not generate dead-time internally — you must provide dead-time to prevent shoot-through (for internal dead-time use the IR2104).
The IR2110 is a high-side & low-side MOSFET/IGBT gate driver. It is used to drive the top (floating-referenced) and bottom power switches in a half/full bridge or inverter quickly and correctly. For the concept, see what is a gate driver.
What is the IR2110 used for?
Motor drives, inverters, SMPS and H-bridge/half-bridge topologies. With HIN and LIN inputs it drives the top and bottom MOSFET independently; the top side uses a bootstrap circuit (diode + capacitor). It supplies the high gate current a logic pin cannot.
Key pins (functional — PDIP-14)
Since numbers can vary by version, they are given by function; for exact numbers see the datasheet.
- HIN / LIN: top / bottom channel logic inputs.
- SD: shutdown.
- VDD / VSS: logic supply / logic ground.
- VCC / COM: low-side gate-drive supply / power reference.
- VB / VS: high-side floating supply (bootstrap) / high-side reference.
- HO / LO: top / bottom gate outputs.
Watch out: bootstrap and dead-time
To drive the top MOSFET, a bootstrap capacitor between VB-VS and a (fast) bootstrap diode from VCC to VB are needed. To prevent the top and bottom switch conducting at once (shoot-through), dead-time must be provided in software/hardware (the IR2110 does not generate dead-time internally).
Equivalents
- IR2104: a half-bridge driver with internal dead-time.
- IR2113: a close, higher-voltage version.
- TLP250: an isolated gate driver (optocoupler).
