What Is the MPU6050? 6-Axis IMU (Accel+Gyro): Specs and Uses
The MPU6050 is a popular sensor with a 3-axis accelerometer + 3-axis gyroscope (a 6-axis IMU) on one chip. It communicates over I2C (address 0x68) and is common on the GY-521 module. It is used for tilt/angle, self-balancing robots and drone control. Raw data is noisy; a real angle needs gyro+accel fusion (the DMP helps); it has no magnetometer.

What is the MPU6050 used for?
Tilt/angle measurement, self-balancing robots, drone flight control, motion detection, gesture and vibration analysis. Its DMP (Digital Motion Processor) can do sensor fusion on-chip. The I2C address is usually 0x68 (0x69 via the AD0 pin).
Highlights
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Axes | 3 accel + 3 gyro (6-axis IMU) |
| Interface | I2C (address 0x68 / 0x69) |
| Accel range | ±2/±4/±8/±16 g (selectable) |
| Gyro range | ±250/±500/±1000/±2000 °/s |
| Supply | Chip 3.3 V (GY-521 module 3.3–5 V, regulated) |
Watch out
The chip is 3.3 V; but the GY-521 module has a regulator so it can be powered from 5 V (I2C lines are 3.3 V logic). The readings are noisy → for a real angle you need gyro+accel fusion (a complementary/Kalman filter); the DMP makes this easier.
Limitations
- No magnetometer (compass) → for absolute heading (yaw drift) you need a 9-axis part (MPU9250).
- Raw data is noisy; calibration and filtering are needed.
Equivalents and alternatives
- MPU9250: 9-axis (magnetometer added).
- ADXL345: accelerometer only.
- BNO055: 9-axis with built-in fusion (easy orientation).
- ICM20948: a modern 9-axis alternative.
