What Is the 1N4007? Rectifier Diode: The 1N400x Family and Uses

October 10, 2026 5 min read
Quick answer

The 1N4007 is the most common rectifier power diode. It is the highest-voltage member of the 1N400x family (1000 V, 1 A); it is used for AC-DC rectification, freewheeling across inductive loads and reverse-polarity protection. It is slow and not suited to high-frequency SMPS (use the UF4007 or a Schottky like the 1N5819).

The 1N4007 is the most common rectifier power diode. It is the highest-voltage member of the 1N400x family (1000 V) and a standard part for converting AC to DC and for reverse-voltage protection. For the concept, see what is a diode.

What is the 1N4007 used for?

Rectification at a mains/transformer output (half/full-wave bridge), freewheel diode across inductive loads (relay/motor), reverse-polarity protection and general-purpose power steering. It carries up to 1 A continuously.

The 1N400x family — by voltage

PartReverse voltage (VR)
1N400150 V
1N4004400 V
1N40071000 V

They all carry 1 A; the only difference is the reverse voltage they withstand. Being the highest, the 1N4007 is the most-chosen "fits everywhere" part.

Limitations

  • It is slow (high trr); not for high-frequency switching supplies → use the UF4007 (fast) or a Schottky (1N5819).
  • Forward drop ~1 V; if you need low loss, prefer a Schottky.
  • For signal-speed work use the 1N4148.

1N4007 equivalents and alternatives

  • 1N4001–1N4006: the lower-voltage members of the same family.
  • UF4007: the fast-recovery version (for SMPS).
  • 1N5408: a stronger 3 A rectifier.
  • 1N5819: a low-loss Schottky alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 1N4007?+
The 1N4007 is the most common rectifier power diode. It is the highest-voltage member of the 1N400x family (1000 V, 1 A); used in AC-DC rectification and reverse-polarity protection.
What voltage/current is the 1N4007?+
Reverse voltage is 1000 V and average forward current is 1 A. In the same family the 1N4001 is 50 V and the 1N4004 400 V; they all carry 1 A.
What is the difference between the 1N4007 and 1N4001?+
Both carry 1 A; the difference is the reverse-voltage rating (1N4007=1000 V, 1N4001=50 V). Being the highest, the 1N4007 is the most-chosen.
Can the 1N4007 be used in a switching power supply?+
Because it is slow (high trr) it is not suitable for high-frequency SMPS; use the UF4007 (fast) or the Schottky 1N5819 instead.
What is a 1N4007 equivalent?+
From the same family the 1N4001–1N4006; the fast version UF4007; the stronger 1N5408 (3 A); the Schottky 1N5819 for low loss.
