How it works
Convert the numeric code printed on surface-mount (SMD) resistors into a readable resistance value. Supports 3/4-digit and EIA-96 codes.
How the SMD code works
SMD resistors are too small to carry color bands, so the value is written as a short number instead. In a 3-digit code the first two digits are the significant value and the third is the power-of-ten multiplier in ohms. In a 4-digit (precision) code the first three digits are the significant value. The letter 'R' marks the decimal point: 4R7 = 4.7 Ω, R47 = 0.47 Ω.
EIA-96 code and zero-ohm
Small 1% resistors use the EIA-96 system: two digits (01–96) select a value from the E96 series and the following letter is the multiplier (A=×1, B=×10, C=×100, D=×1k, F=×100k; R/Y=×0.01, S/X=×0.1). A resistor marked 0, 00 or 000 is a zero-ohm jumper — not a resistor but a bridge (link) on the board.
Worked examples
- 472 → 47 × 10² = 4,700 Ω = 4.7 kΩ
- 4702 (4-digit) → 470 × 10² = 47,000 Ω = 47 kΩ
- 4R7 → 4.7 Ω
- EIA-96 01C → 100 × 100 = 10,000 Ω = 10 kΩ
