What Are Gain and Amplification?
Gain is the ratio that shows how much an amplifier enlarges its input signal. Raising a weak signal like a microphone's to a level that can drive a speaker is amplification; the amount of that enlargement is the gain.
What Is Gain?
Gain is simply the output / input ratio. For example, an amplifier that turns a 10 mV input into 1 V has a voltage gain of 100. This enlargement is usually done by transistors and op-amps.
