What Is ESD Protection?
ESD protection is all the components and methods that prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from instantly burning sensitive electronic circuits.
What Is ESD?
Static charge built up in the body or objects discharges as a very short pulse of thousands of volts when it touches a conductive surface. This pulse is very low-energy but high-voltage and can punch through MCU input stages.
How Is It Protected?
ESD protection diodes (usually small TVS structures) that are normally insulating and conduct at high voltage are connected to sensitive pins. When a pulse arrives the excess energy is sent through this diode to ground/the supply rail, and the chip is protected.
| Measure | Purpose |
|---|---|
| ESD diode | Routes the pulse to a path |
| Low capacitance | Doesn't slow the data line |
| Wrist strap/grounding | Doesn't build charge in assembly |
On Data Lines
On externally-exposed high-speed lines like USB and HDMI, the ESD diode must be low-capacitance; otherwise it corrupts the signal. So special ESD components are made for data lines.
Production Measures
In assembly a grounded wrist strap, antistatic mat and ESD bags are used; this ensures the static charge is discharged before touching the component.
Common Mistakes
- Not protecting the connector: all externally-exposed pins (USB, buttons) are open to ESD.
- High capacitance: a wrong ESD diode corrupts high-speed data.
- Static in assembly: working ungrounded silently weakens the chip.
