A filter is a circuit that passes certain frequencies in a signal and attenuates the others. Because it behaves according to frequency, it rests on impedance and frequency.

Every filter decides which of a signal's frequencies will "pass." It's used to remove unwanted noise or to isolate a particular frequency band.

Cutoff Frequency
The frequency where the filter transitions between "passing" and "blocking" is the cutoff frequency. At that point the signal drops to about 70% (−3 dB). The cutoff is set by the component values used.
RC Filter
The simplest filter is the RC filter, made of a resistor and a capacitor. Its cutoff is directly tied to the RC time constant; as R or C grows, the cutoff drops.
Where Is It Used?
In audio systems (bass/treble split), smoothing a power supply output, AC/DC separation and cleaning noise from a sensor signal.
Common Mistakes
- Miscalculating the cutoff: R and C set the cutoff point; change one and the frequency shifts.
- Forgetting the loading effect: a load connected to the filter output can change its behavior.
- Assuming one stage is enough: a simple RC filter has a gentle roll-off; sharp separation needs a multi-stage filter.
