What Is a DC-DC Power Module?
A DC-DC power module is a ready-to-use power component where the whole circuit of a DC-DC converter (inductor, controller, capacitors) is gathered on a ready board.

Adjustable Output
In many modules the output voltage is set with a trimpot; the same module can be used for different voltages in different projects. Fixed-output (e.g. 5V) types also exist.

High efficiency, small size and fast integration. It's widely used in prototypes and mass products to convert a battery/adapter voltage to the circuit's need.

Input and Output Range
Every module has an input voltage range; outside this range it either won't work or is damaged. In a buck module the output must be below the input, in a boost module above. If both step-down and step-up are needed (e.g. a changing battery voltage), a buck-boost module is chosen.
Common Mistakes
- Current limit: exceeding the current the module can give causes heating/shutdown.
- Skipping adjustment: connecting the output trimpot to the load without measuring gives the wrong voltage.
- Noise: a sensitive analog load may need an extra filter at the module output.
