What Is a BLDC (Brushless DC) Motor?
A BLDC (brushless DC) motor is an efficient motor that removes the brush-commutator system of a classic DC motor and uses electronic commutation instead.
How Does It Work?
The windings are on the stator, not the rotor; the magnet is on the rotor. A driver circuit (ESC) electronically energizes the windings in the right order to produce rotation. There's no mechanical brush.
Position Sensing
For the commutation to be timed correctly, the rotor position must be known. This is done with Hall sensors or by reading the back-EMF the windings produce (sensorless).
| Property | BLDC | Brushed DC |
|---|---|---|
| Brush | None | Yes (wears) |
| Efficiency/Life | High | Low |
| Driver | Complex (ESC) | Simple |
Advantages
Since there's no brush, there's no wear, sparking or interference; efficiency, life and power density are high. It's silent and maintenance-free.
Where Is It Used?
Drones, computer fans, electric vehicles, home appliances, disk drives and every application needing high efficiency.
The Need for a Driver
A BLDC can't run on its own; it needs an electronic controller (ESC) to drive the windings in time. This raises the cost and complexity compared to a brushed motor but greatly improves performance.
Inrunner and Outrunner
A BLDC comes in two structures. The inrunner spins the magnet inside; it gives high RPM and is used in RC vehicles and power tools. The outrunner spins the body's outside; it offers high torque at low RPM, ideal for drone propellers and direct-drive fans.
Common Mistakes
- Running without a driver: a BLDC isn't connected directly to DC, an ESC is essential.
- Wrong commutation: faulty timing causes vibration and efficiency loss.
- Sensorless startup: the back-EMF is weak at low speed, so startup can be hard.
