What Is a 555 Timer?
The 555 timer is one of the most famous and versatile ICs in electronics, used for timing, delay, pulse and square-wave generation. Countless timing circuits are built with a few external parts.
How Does It Work?
Inside it there are two comparators, a flip-flop and an output stage. An external resistor and capacitor (RC) set the timing through the capacitor's charge-discharge time.
Two Basic Modes

Astable Mode

Monostable Mode (One-Shot)
In monostable mode the 555 is normally off; when a trigger pulse arrives it holds the output high for a set time (set by R and C) then turns off. This "one-shot" behavior is used in button debouncing, generating a time delay and creating a fixed-duration pulse.
Common Mistakes
- RC selection: a wrong resistor/capacitor gives an unwanted frequency/duration.
- Supply noise: a supply capacitor should be added to prevent instability.
- Output current: the 555 gives limited current; a driver is needed for a heavy load.
