What Is the WS2812B (NeoPixel)? Addressable RGB LED and Uses
The WS2812B (NeoPixel) is an addressable RGB LED with a built-in driver IC. It is controlled in a chain from a single data line; hundreds of LEDs run from one pin, each in its own color/brightness (24-bit). It runs on 5 V and each LED draws ~60 mA at full white (100 LEDs ~6 A). A ~330 Ω on DIN and ~1000 µF on the supply are recommended; timing is strict (FastLED/NeoPixel library).
The WS2812B (NeoPixel) is an addressable RGB LED with a built-in driver IC. Each LED is controlled in a chain from a single data line, so you can drive hundreds of LEDs from one pin, each in its own color/brightness. For the concept, see what is an LED driver · what is an LED.
What is the WS2812B used for?
LED strips, matrix panels, ambient/effect lighting and status indicators. Each pixel takes 24-bit color (8-bit R/G/B). Data is sent to the first LED's DIN; each LED takes its own data and passes the rest out of DOUT to the next.
WS2812B connection (4 terminals)
| Terminal | Function |
|---|---|
| VDD | +5 V |
| GND | Ground |
| DIN | Data in (from MCU / previous LED DOUT) |
| DOUT | Data out (to next LED DIN) |
Watch out: supply, capacitor, resistor
The WS2812B runs on 5 V and each LED draws ~60 mA at full white → 100 LEDs ~6 A! Size the supply accordingly. Recommendations: a large capacitor (e.g. 1000 µF) across the supply, a ~330 Ω series resistor on the DIN line, and power injection on long strips (voltage drop). With a 3.3 V MCU a level shifter may be needed for DIN. The protocol timing is strict (use a library: FastLED / Adafruit NeoPixel).
Limitations
- High current (~60 mA per LED at full white).
- Timing-sensitive; can glitch on interrupt-heavy systems.
- A single failed LED can affect the rest of the chain.
Equivalents and alternatives
- WS2811: a driver for external LEDs (groups of 3 on 12 V strips).
- SK6812: WS2812-compatible, also an RGBW version.
- APA102 (DotStar): separate clock line (SPI), faster/more stable.
