What Is the TL082? JFET-Input Dual Op-Amp and Uses

November 7, 2026 4 min read
Quick answer

The TL082 is a JFET-input, dual-channel op-amp. With high input impedance and low input current it is the wider-bandwidth relative of the TL072; used in active filters, buffers and general analog circuits. It is pin-compatible with the TL072: the TL072 is lower-noise (audio), the TL082 has wider bandwidth. It is not rail-to-rail.

The TL082 is a JFET-input, dual-channel op-amp. With high input impedance and low input current it is the wider-bandwidth/faster relative of the TL072; common in audio and general analog circuits. For the concept, see what is an op-amp.

What is the TL082 used for?

Active filters, buffers, signal amplification, sample-and-hold and general analog processing. Its JFET input reads high-impedance sources (sensors, piezo) without loading them. It runs from a single or dual (±) supply.

Watch out

The TL082 and TL072 are pin-compatible; the TL072 is lower-noise (preferred for audio), the TL082 has wider bandwidth. It is not rail-to-rail; the output won't reach the supply rails. For single-supply use the input needs a reference (half-supply).

Equivalents

  • TL072: pin-compatible, low-noise sibling (audio).
  • LF353: a very similar JFET dual op-amp.
  • TL084: the quad-channel member of the family.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TL082?+
The TL082 is a JFET-input, dual-channel op-amp. With high input impedance and low input current it is the wider-bandwidth relative of the TL072; it is used in filters, buffers and general analog circuits.
What is the difference between the TL082 and the TL072?+
The two are pin-compatible. The TL072 is lower-noise (preferred for audio); the TL082 has wider bandwidth. They come from the same JFET-input family.
Is the TL082 rail-to-rail?+
No. Its output does not reach the supply rails. If a rail-to-rail output is needed, modern op-amps like the MCP6002 should be chosen.
What is an equivalent of the TL082?+
For low noise the TL072; the very similar LF353; for four channels the TL084.
