What Is the LM741? Classic Op-Amp: Pinout, Offset Null and Uses

October 5, 2026 6 min read
Quick answer

The LM741 (uA741) is a classic, internally frequency-compensated single operational amplifier (op-amp). It works best from a symmetric (±5–±18 V) supply and is a standard in teaching and classic analog circuits. With a ~1 MHz GBW and ~0.5 V/µs slew rate it is slow, and it is not suited to single supply — for that, the TL071 or LM358 is preferred.

The LM741 (uA741) is the most classic single operational amplifier (op-amp) in electronics history. Internally frequency-compensated and simple to use, it is a teaching standard. Most modern designs have moved to newer op-amps, but it remains a cornerstone for learning op-amps and for classic circuits. For the concept, see what is an op-amp.

What is the LM741 used for?

It amplifies, compares or performs math (summing, integration, differentiation) on a weak analog signal. Being single, it holds one op-amp per package. It works best from a symmetric (±) supply — which sets it apart from the single-supply LM358.

Key electrical specifications

Offset null adjustment

Pins 1 and 5 null the DC offset at the output: connect a 10 kΩ potentiometer between pin 1 and pin 5 with its wiper to V−, and adjust until the output reads 0 V. In most non-precision uses they can be left unconnected.

Limitations

  • Slow: a ~0.5 V/µs slew rate is low for fast/high-frequency signals.
  • Not ideal for single supply: its input and output cannot get close to the rails; for single-supply work the LM358 is better.
  • Noise/offset: higher than modern precision op-amps.

LM741 equivalents and alternatives

  • TL071: JFET input, faster, low noise — the modern replacement for the 741.
  • LM358: single-supply, dual op-amp.
  • NE5532: low noise, for audio.
  • OP07: for precision (low-offset) applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the LM741?+
The LM741 (uA741) is a classic, internally frequency-compensated single operational amplifier (op-amp). It is a standard part in teaching and classic analog circuits, and works best from a symmetric supply.
What supply voltage does the LM741 need?+
It typically runs from a ±5 V – ±18 V symmetric supply. For best performance, use a dual (±) supply.
What is the LM741 pinout?+
8-pin: pins 1 and 5 are offset null, 2 is input−, 3 is input+, 4 is V−, 6 is the output, 7 is V+, and 8 is NC (no connection).
What do the LM741 offset null pins (1 and 5) do?+
They null the DC offset at the output: connect a 10 kΩ pot between pins 1 and 5 with its wiper to V−, and adjust until the output reads 0 V. In most applications they can be left unconnected.
What are LM741 equivalents?+
The modern replacement is the TL071 (JFET, faster); the LM358 for single supply; the NE5532 for audio; the OP07 for precision work.
