What Is the LM3886? Hi-Fi Audio Power Amplifier and Uses
The LM3886 is a high-quality hi-fi audio power amplifier (~68 W, 8Ω). With low distortion and built-in protection (thermal, short-circuit, SPiKE) it is the classic chip of audiophile DIY amps (the Gainclone). It is class-AB linear: cleaner than class-D but less efficient, needing a good heatsink and a dual (±) supply. The MUTE pin prevents turn-on 'thump'.
The LM3886 is a high-quality hi-fi audio power amplifier (around 68 W). With low distortion and built-in protection (thermal, short-circuit, SPiKE), it is the legendary chip of audiophile DIY amps (e.g. the "Gainclone"). For the concept, see what is an audio amplifier.
What is the LM3886 used for?
High-quality home hi-fi amps, studio monitor drivers and powerful audio stages. Being a class-AB linear amp it is cleaner (lower distortion) than class-D but less efficient and needs a larger heatsink.
Key pins (functional — TO-220-11)
An 11-lead body; for exact numbers see the datasheet. Main pins: +IN, −IN, OUTPUT, +Vs, −Vs, GND, MUTE. It runs from a dual (±) supply.
Specifications
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Power | ~68 W (8Ω, at low distortion) |
| Class | Class-AB (linear) |
| Supply | Dual (±) — typically ±28–35 V |
| Protection | Thermal, short-circuit, SPiKE |
Watch out
Being class-AB it needs a good heatsink and a proper (±) supply. The MUTE pin is enabled with a resistor (prevents turn-on/off "thump"). Layout and supply capacitors matter for sound quality.
