What Is the BME280? Pressure+Humidity+Temperature Sensor and Uses

October 21, 2026 5 min read
Quick answer

The BME280 is a Bosch environmental sensor that measures pressure, humidity and temperature on one chip. It communicates over I2C (0x76/0x77) or SPI (temp ±1 °C, humidity ±3%, pressure ±1 hPa). It is used in weather and altitude projects and is far more accurate than the DHT22. Its humidity-less, cheaper sibling is the BMP280; the chip is 3.3 V.

The BME280 is a Bosch environmental sensor that measures pressure, humidity and temperature on one chip. It communicates over I2C or SPI and, with its high accuracy, is preferred for weather and altitude projects. For the concept, see what is a humidity sensor · what is a temperature sensor.

What is the BME280 used for?

Weather stations, indoor climate monitoring, altitude estimation (from pressure) and HVAC. It is far more accurate and faster than the DHT22 and also gives pressure. Its pressure-only-plus-temperature sibling without humidity is the BMP280.

Specifications

ParameterValue
MeasuresPressure + humidity + temperature
InterfaceI2C (0x76/0x77) or SPI
AccuracyTemp ±1 °C, humidity ±3%, pressure ±1 hPa
SupplyChip 3.3 V (module 3.3–5 V)

Watch out

The chip is 3.3 V; I2C lines are 3.3 V logic. Some modules sold as "BME280" are actually the humidity-less BMP280 — if there is no humidity reading, check your module (distinguished by I2C address and chip-id).

Equivalents

  • BMP280: NO humidity, cheaper.
  • BME680: adds air quality (VOC).
  • SHT31 + a pressure sensor: a separate accurate solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BME280?+
The BME280 is a Bosch environmental sensor that measures pressure, humidity and temperature on a single chip. It communicates over I2C (0x76/0x77) or SPI and is used in weather-station and altitude projects.
What is the difference between the BME280 and the BMP280?+
The BME280 also measures humidity; the BMP280 measures only pressure + temperature (NO humidity) and is cheaper. Check the chip when buying a module so you don't mix them up.
How do you connect the BME280?+
Over I2C via SDA/SCL/VCC/GND (address 0x76 or 0x77), or over SPI. The chip is 3.3 V; if the module has a regulator it can be powered from 5 V.
How do you measure altitude with the BME280?+
It does not give altitude directly; it is computed from barometric pressure (with a sea-level reference). As pressure changes, relative altitude change can also be tracked.
What is a BME280 equivalent?+
The cheaper, humidity-less BMP280; the BME680 if you also want air quality; an SHT31 + a pressure sensor as a separate accurate solution.
