What Is the A4988? Stepper Driver: Microstepping, Vref and Uses
The A4988 is a bipolar stepper motor driver module. With microstepping up to 1/16, an adjustable current limit (Vref) and a STEP/DIR interface, it is a classic in 3D printers and CNC. Motor voltage 8–35 V, coil current up to ~2 A with a heatsink. Vref setting and thermal management are critical; do not connect the motor while the driver is powered.
The A4988 is a bipolar stepper motor driver. With microstepping (up to 1/16), an adjustable current limit and a simple STEP/DIR interface, it is the classic driver module of the 3D-printer and CNC world. For the concept, see what is a stepper motor · what is a motor driver.
What is the A4988 used for?
Driving bipolar (4-wire) stepper motors in 3D printers, CNC and robotics axes. On each STEP pulse the motor takes one (micro)step; the DIR pin sets direction. A small pot sets the current limit (Vref).
Highlights
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | Bipolar stepper driver |
| Microstep | Full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 |
| Coil current | ~1 A (no cooling), ~2 A with a heatsink |
| Motor voltage | 8 – 35 V |
| Interface | STEP / DIR + MS1/MS2/MS3 (microstep) |
Watch out: Vref and heat
Before connecting the motor, set the current limit (Vref) with the pot; high current overheats the chip (needs a heatsink/fan). Do NOT plug/unplug the motor while the driver is powered — it can be damaged. The Reset and Sleep pins are usually tied together.
Limitations
- Bipolar steppers only (unipolar needs a different driver).
- At high current/voltage the DRV8825 is a better fit.
- Thermal management is critical.
Equivalents and alternatives
- DRV8825: higher current/voltage, 1/32 microstep.
- TMC2208 / TMC2209: silent (StealthChop) drivers.
- DRV8834: a low-voltage alternative.
