What Is the 1N4733? 5.1V Zener Diode and Uses
The 1N4733 is a 5.1 V, ~1 W Zener diode (the 1N47xx family). It conducts in reverse at 5.1 V, providing a voltage reference and over-voltage protection. It is always used with a series resistor (R = (Vin − 5.1)/Iz); without one it burns out. The cathode goes to the (+) side, the anode to the (−). The family includes the 1N4740 (10 V) and 1N4742 (12 V).
The 1N4733 is a 5.1 V Zener diode (the 1N47xx 1 W Zener family). Zener diodes conduct in reverse at a specific voltage, providing a voltage reference/clamp. For the concept, see what is a Zener diode.
What is the 1N4733 used for?
A simple voltage reference, over-voltage protection (clamp), level shifting and supply clamping. The 1N47xx family comes in different Zener voltages (e.g. 1N4733=5.1 V, 1N4740=10 V, 1N4742=12 V); all are ~1 W.
Specifications
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | Zener diode |
| Zener voltage (VZ) | 5.1 V |
| Power | ~1 W |

Watch out: series resistor
A Zener is always used with a series resistor to limit current: R = (Vin − Vz) / Iz. Without a resistor the Zener burns out from excess current. The cathode goes to the (+) side, the anode to the (−) side (reverse bias).
